Substance Use Prevention, Advocacy, Treatment And Recovery Support
Unfortunately, just about everyone knows someone suffering from addiction. But they may not know where to turn for help.
Founded in 1984, Hanley Foundation helps prevent and treat substance use disorder with evidence-based programming. The only behavioral health continuum of its kind in the country, Hanley serves 100,000 students and individuals every year in 34 Florida counties with their prevention, advocacy, treatment and recovery programs. “We really do it all,” says CEO Rachel Docekal, MBA, Ed.D.
In March 2020, Hanley Foundation board member Michelle Makris’ 23-year-old son Brice passed away from an accidental fentanyl poisoning. Turning their pain into purpose, Michelle and her husband John created the Brice Makris Endowment Fund, which has provided hundreds of scholarships to people with financial burdens.
“Hanley became our lifeline,” says Makris. “Brice had been told that if he worked hard on recovery, he could save 100 individuals from this disease. That became his mission and it’s the legacy we’re carrying on for him today by reaching more people through Hanley.”
Chaired by the Makris’, the 4th annual Brice Makris Brunch will take place on Dec. 15 at The Boca Raton to raise awareness and funds for Hanley’s scholarship programs. The Brice Makris Community Spirit Award will be presented to MDVIP, an exceptional provider of primary care and a supporter of Hanley’s mission. Sponsorships, tickets and volunteer opportunities are still available and the organization is accepting auction item donations.
Makris has become a resource for parents. “Michelle is a role model, willing to tell her story and discuss the dangers of drugs and alcohol,” says Docekal.
Makris finds fulfillment in helping others. “I’m honored to get phone calls from moms, dads, brothers, friends who know someone in crisis,” she says. “We can do a lot to help. It’s motivating when someone knows there is hope.”
Though difficult at times, Makris gains peace by helping others.
“I do it all in my son’s name. I feel closer to my son,” she says. “If I can save one person or one family from the heartbreak I’ve experienced, I’m doing my job.”
