Holy Ground PBC is a secular organization serving pregnant or parenting young women and their children who are experiencing homelessness in Palm Beach County, who are willing to make positive changes in their lives. This organization is about more than support; it is a lifeline for young mothers experiencing homelessness. Through a unique, holistic model, Holy Ground PBC provides these families with a stable place to live but also with the resources, mentorship and support necessary to rebuild their lives.
“This is not a homeless shelter,” says Lonnie K. Martens, Esq., President of the Board. “Families stay with us for three to four years because real, sustainable change requires time.”
Martens, a business law professor at Keiser University Flagship Campus, has been with the organization since its inception over a decade ago and has witnessed the profound impact Holy Ground PBC’s approach has on women and children.
Holy Ground PBC provides fully furnished apartments, but housing is just one part of the broader vision. The women receive comprehensive support, including mentoring, job assistance, therapy, financial literacy classes and wellness programs.
“Our focus is giving these young mothers the tools and opportunities to create generational change,” explains Executive Director Michelle Haimowitz.
Holy Ground PBC is not government funded. It is solely funded by grants and donations from individuals, foundations and businesses who recognize its mission’s importance.
“We are disrupting the cycles of homelessness and poverty in a way that creates lasting change. Our supporters understand the impact this has on breaking barriers for generations to come,” Haimowitz says.
Participants in the program pursue a GED and secure employment, with many going on to earn college degrees.
“Our mission is to help these women take control of their futures. We’re here to guide and support them every step of the way,” Martens adds.
For their children, the impact is equally significant. Shown in the photo, Holy Ground PBC’s “Learning Tree” tutoring program has helped turn around academic outcomes, moving children from failing grades to achieving honor roll.
Holy Ground PBC’s annual fundraising luncheon will take place on Jan. 26, 2025, at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens.
