Dr. Daniel Baluch Diagnoses And Treats Painful Spinal Conditions
If you have a painful spinal condition, you need a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of the problem.
“Getting the right diagnosis is critical,” says Daniel A. Baluch, M.D., who specializes in treating spinal conditions at Orthopaedic Surgery Associates in Boca Raton. “You can’t simply rely on imaging studies. A spinal scan might detect an abnormality, but it takes a thorough evaluation by an experienced specialist to determine whether or not it is the cause of your pain.”
In his practice, Dr. Baluch treats issues of the cervical (upper) and lumbar (lower) spine, from minimally invasive treatments to traditional surgery.
“Today, there are many types of nonsurgical and surgical treatments available to alleviate painful symptoms,” he says. “Fortunately, the vast majority of spinal problems can be treated without an operation.”
Spinal surgery procedures and outcomes have improved dramatically in the past decade, says Dr. Baluch, who is in the forefront of his profession. He was the lead author of a recent study in the journal Spine on placing cortical screws in the lumbar spine.
“Our clinical research showed these new screws were highly effective with less injury to muscles,” he says. “However, spinal treatments need to be customized because every patient is different.”
For example, Dr. Baluch recently saw a patient with multiple abnormal discs who was worried about the prospect of extensive spinal surgery. After a careful evaluation, he found that only one of the discs was responsible for the patient’s pain and was able to correct the problem through a minimally invasive procedure.
As a partner at Orthopaedic Surgery Associates – which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of hand, knee, hip, spinal, foot and other orthopedic disorders and injuries – Dr. Baluch says: “We believe in building a relationship of trust between the patient and physician. That includes listening to our patients, identifying the problem and providing excellent personalized care.”
