Debra Feit
Prenuptial, Postnuptial and Trust Attorney
Debra Feit, owner of The Feit Law Firm, has found an important niche that focuses on prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and trusts for couples sharing a life together.
“I call it a road map to marriage that can give both of you peace of mind so you can sleep through the night now knowing you have security,” Feit says.
Prenup and postnup documents define financial expectations in a relationship and help outline financial security. For example, the spouse who leaves a career to raise the family can find security in knowing the other spouse makes yearly gifts to a trust created just for the stay-at-home parent.
“For couples who say they don’t want a prenup, my answer is, ‘You have a prenup! The state wrote it,” Feit said. “If you want to let the state decide how to divide your assets, you can, or you can create a contract around it.”
Feit has a passion for empowering clients and educating them on their rights. She has witnessed many divorces where, often, the wife was left with nothing after the wealthier spouse was able to take houses, cars and close bank accounts. Attending law school at age 42, Feit has since earned an LLM at Boston University School of Law. She also earned an MBA from University of Miami after graduating from Smith College.
Feit was a stay-at-home parent living in Franklin Lakes, N.J., before she returned to Florida, where she attended law school. She was a litigator for ten years living in Fort Lauderdale and is now returning to her hometown of Boca Ratona and starting her niche practice.
While prenups should be created well before a wedding, postnups can be created at any time.
“Even couples who are living together can benefit from having a roadmap for the financial lives,” she said. “Every love story is unique and that’s why I offer a range of services. It’s creating your plan while you still love each other.”
