For Timothy D. Miller Jr., M.D., Of Marcus Neuroscience Institute, It Really Is Brain Surgery
Getting people back on their feet and living their best life is what Timothy D. Miller Jr., M.D., focuses on every day. Dr. Miller, who specializes in the treatment of brain tumors, spinal disorders and the surgical treatment of pain, came to the Marcus Neuroscience Institute in Boca Raton two years ago from Duke University, where he trained as a resident and fellow.
“When I came here, I was blown away to see that the Marcus Neuroscience Institute has all of the bells and whistles of any top-notch facility in the nation,” says Dr. Miller.
Opened in 2014, the 56,000-square-foot facility houses a 20-bed Neuro Intensive Care and Step-Down Unit, a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit and four dedicated operating rooms.
Dr. Miller is one of 13 specialists, five of whom perform brain surgery. He has a subspecialty as a functional neurosurgeon, with a focus on the surgical treatment of pain syndromes. He and his team also treat tumors of the brain, spine and spinal cord. Most spinal disorders are the result of degenerative disc and joint disease, which can cause pain in the legs and back.
Dr. Miller looks at surgery as a last line of therapy in most cases.
“I specialize in minimally invasive techniques for addressing those issues, but we don’t shy away from patients who need larger spine surgeries,” he says.
The Marcus Neuroscience Institute is able to offer non-surgical pain solutions, such as injections, radiofrequency ablations and physical therapy, as well as minimally invasive procedures, including spine surgery and spinal cord stimulation.
The Institute is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, such as intraoperative MRI, intraoperative CT scanners, 3-D endoscopic equipment and the latest in image guidance.
“We have everything necessary to treat patients safely and provide the top level of care,” says Dr. Miller.
The Institute takes a team approach to treating patients, with physicians often consulting each other on patient care and treatment. Often, two neurosurgeons will team up to perform larger or complicated surgeries.
“It’s better to have two minds to think about the problem and run issues by each other,” Dr. Miller says. “That’s unique to our situation and allows us to provide patients with the best care possible.”
