Celebrating nearly 30 years of involvement with United Way of Palm Beach County, Craig Jenkins, now board chair, remains motivated by the tangible results and impact the nonprofit has in the community — supporting more than 110 programs and initiatives that directly serve Palm Beach County residents.
Jenkins says the number of residents in Palm Beach County facing food insecurity has gone down by about one-third since United Way began focusing its efforts on the cause. In collaborative efforts, a new state-of-the-art community kitchen will aid in reducing the number of food-insecure individuals. This facility will result in more meals being stored and delivered to local residents in need.
United Way of Palm Beach County also supports the Summer BreakSpot program to offset food insecurity for students and their families during the summer months.
A healthcare executive by day, Jenkins began volunteering with United Way of Palm Beach County in 1995 by helping direct millions in donations to critical community programs.
“Donations and grants are only used within Palm Beach County — right in our backyard,” Jenkins says. “We support organizations that benefit one in five Palm Beach County residents.”
Jenkins works with the executive staff at United Way to identify the needs of local organizations and strategizes ways to support and raise awareness for their missions by connecting donors to specific projects and causes that they are passionate about, whether it’s to help address food insecurity, access to healthcare, educational success for youth, housing assistance, services for veterans and more.
“Our mission is to ensure that everyone in Palm Beach County has access to the basics, creating a community where all residents can reach their full potential,” Jenkins says.
Jenkins is grateful to his family and employer for supporting him in this volunteer work.
“We’re able to be a voice for organizations in our local community,” he says. “United Way aligns the community’s kindness and hearts to the most pressing local needs.”
