The YMCA of South Palm Beach County is celebrating its 50th anniversary. They’re nostalgic reflecting on their accomplishments over the past five decades while also excited about their future.
The Y is a nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting people to their potential, purpose and each other. Working locally, they focus on empowering young people, improving health and well-being and inspiring action in communities. The YMCA enriches lives and strengthens community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Serving over 70,000 people every year, they provide more than $1 million in financial assistance annually to ensure everyone has access to YMCA programs and activities.
The YMCA of South Palm Beach County offers several programs, including water safety and drowning prevention. “We’ve taught countless kids how to be safe in and around water,” says Jason Hagensick, President and CEO of the YMCA of South Palm Beach County, “and we are committed to continuing to do that.”
Since the pandemic, the Y has expanded program offerings for teens during out-of-school hours. “We’re giving teens a place to belong, work collaboratively with other teens and develop into responsible adults,” he says.
In fact, it is those teen programs that drove current Chief Volunteer Officer Jackie Reeves’ involvement in the Y. Both Reeves’ daughters participated in and graduated from Y teen leadership and volunteer programs. “That reaffirmed my understanding and involvement in the Y,” she says. “When you dive in deep, you see, feel and communicate with the people that benefit from the Y. The impact is so overwhelming that it brings you to tears.”
Looking ahead, the Y is planning to add staff, programs and facilities in an effort to continue meeting ever-changing community needs. “These past 50 years have truly been amazing for our YMCA,” says Hagensick. “We owe so much to those leaders that have helped shape our YMCA and we look forward to engaging the community and seeing what we can accomplish together,” added Reeves.
