Dale McLean and Chase, Kim and Randy Sweers

On May 4, the excitement of the Kentucky Derby will come to South Florida at the American Cancer Society’s Celebration Gala, themed “Race for Research,” at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa.

The event’s chairperson is Lori Castle, and co-chairs are Peter and LoriAnn Gary.

The evening will feature a cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions, and a performance by Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter Alexander Star. Donations made at the gala, sponsored by The Salah Foundation, will support the mission of the American Cancer Society.

Live auction items include a Red Sox experience package; an ESPY Awards experience package; customized artwork by Josh Leidolf – The Money Artist; a Celebrity Cruise; a stay in Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and a $5,000 shopping spree from Rene Ruiz Collection by Luis Escudero. Attendees may purchase a Derby-themed stuffed animal that will be donated on their behalf to a local children’s hospital.

City Furniture President Keith Koenig and his wife, Kelly – longtime supporters in the fight against cancer – will be the Celebration Gala honorees. Lori Samuels will be the Survivor Speaker, sharing her story of battling cancer. Dale McLean, in-arena host for the Miami Heat, and auctioneer Joe Girvan will serve as the event’s hosts.

“We are anticipating that this year’s Celebration Gala will be the most successful to date,” Castle says. “Attendees will enjoy an incredible evening, all for the important cause of saving lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures and by fighting back against cancer.” O
