Raising Awareness

Brain Bowl Luncheon Helps Alzheimer’s, Other Neurocognitive Disorders

Dr. Chris Nowinski

On Feb. 8 the 9th Annual Brain Bowl Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. at Boca West Country Club.

Pat Dean is this year’s Honorary Chairperson of the event which supports other Alzheimer’s related nonprofits, uniting all of us to raise funds and awareness in our area.

Past recipients of proceeds include the Louis And Anne Green  Memory & Wellness Center and the Christine E. Lynn College Of Nursing at FAU; the Alzheimer’s Association; the Boca Walk To End Alzheimer’s for the Alzheimer’s Association; the National Parkinson Foundation; Alzheimer’s Community Care; and the American Association Of Caregiving Youth.

Aside from those beneficiaries, this event also highlights other nonprofits, seemingly unrelated to the mission.

The luncheon theme this year is the Super Bowl and the keynote speaker is the neurologist for the Miami Dolphins football team, Dr. Chris Nowinski.

Dr. Nowinski is CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and leads the global conversation on concussions and the future of sports.

An All-Ivy Harvard football player-turned professional wrestler-turned neuroscientist, Dr. Nowinski discovered the sports concussion crisis the hard way, when a kick to his chin in a 2003 WWE match ended that career. Dr. Nowinski’s struggle with post-concussion syndrome sent him on a  journey regarding a global public health issue that is only now beginning to be understood.

To retrain his brain, Dr. Nowinski wrote the investigative expose, “Head Games: Football’s Concussion Crisis,” which exposed how the NFL had  covered up the costs of concussions. He founded the nonprofit Concussion Legacy Foundation (“CLF”), where he continues to serve as CEO, as well as the Boston University (BU) CTE Center and the VA-BU CLF Brain Bank, where he serves as the Outreach, Recruitment Education and Public Policy Leader.
