The “Jewish Oprah” Of The Levis JCC

98-Year-Old Boca Raton Woman A Lifeline For Others

Among the multitude of literary events, theatre performances, film festivals and expert lectures presented by the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC Sandler Center are gems like “The Ladies Room with Trudy Berlin,” hosted by 98-year-old Boca Raton resident Trudy Berlin.

Berlin has been leading the weekly series since 2000, offering a dependable and inviting space for women to discuss everything from love and loss to politics and current events.

When all in-person programming at the Sandler Center came to an abrupt halt in March 2020, Berlin offered to host her class on Zoom Tuesdays from 10 – 11:30 a.m. to keep her community of ladies connected during difficult times.

Berlin serves as a sounding board for more than 50 women who call in from Florida, New York, Canada and beyond.

“Dubbed the ‘Jewish Oprah’ of our community, women come to Trudy for her sage advice and wisdom,” says Stephanie Owitz, director of arts, culture and learning for the Levis JCC Sandler Center. “The weekly series has become a lifeline for so many this year.”

Berlin, who was born in New York City in 1923, attended Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y., but left school soon after getting married. At the age of 39, she enrolled in Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y. and graduated in 1967. She earned both a bachelor’s degree in literature and community studies and a master’s degree in college teaching.

Berlin’s class is free for those with an annual virtual membership and $10 for non-members. The cost of a virtual membership is $180 per household and is valid for one year from the date of purchase.
