Gather Round

Comedian great Jerry Seinfeld once said, “There is no such thing as fun for the whole family,” but, as the matriarch of my clan, I’m going to have to disagree.

With both of my boys grown, living out of state and busy forging their own lives, there’s nothing I adore more than those few and far-between opportunities to gather all four of us under one roof — even if that means bickering about who left the lights on or where we’ll go out to eat next. Being together is my nourishment, and oftentimes, it’s the nonstop family energy I once wondered how I’d survive that I now miss the most.

And speaking of energy, we’re bringing a whole lot of family fun in this issue — starting with our cover story, “Family Comes First” (page 58), where we chat with sensational broadcast journalist Deborah Norville about her extraordinary career and how she manages to balance that with the ever-important role of motherhood.

“Power Pair” (page 70) explores the unstoppable bond of family and business through the lens of sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard: the dynamic duo behind the successful fashion brand, Veronica Beard.

Beyond these inspirational role models seamlessly navigating family with business and fame, we explore the trending topic of whether our youth is taking longer to reach adulthood today, and if so, why. “Slow To Grow” (page 64) looks into the current state of affairs for 20-somethings. As a mother with children in this age demographic, I found this story particularly insightful.

Lastly, our editor Alona Abbady Martinez introduces us to a hidden gem in “The Beauty Of Bonaire” (page 76) — a stunning, off-the-radar island in the Caribbean known for exceptional diving, friendly folk and a laid-back vibe. For those seeking a new family destination, this may easily become your new favorite spot.

Whether you surround yourself with your family of birth, your chosen tribe or — like I do — a combination of both, there’s nothing quite like gathering round those you love most.
