It’s Better To Give

November Is Always An Inspiring Month

November is always an inspiring month.

We’re giving thanks for the bounty at our holiday meal (and, yes, for lower humidity) and enjoying time with family and friends. Many of us are attending dazzling galas, inspiring luncheons and other charity events – all to better the lives of others.

That’s why our annual Giving Issue, packed with feel-good stories about people who are making a difference in our community and beyond, is such a favorite for our team to create. Inside, you’ll discover a plethora of worthy causes, motivating volunteers and ways you can join other passionate people bringing joy and hope to others.

They say charity begins at home, and our interview with MLB star and Parkland native Anthony Rizzo proves that. Carve out some time for “Hometown Hero” (page 64), a touching story about the Chicago Cubs first baseman’s battle with cancer as a young adult and his efforts to support kids and families going through the same life-changing fight.

Country star Miranda Lambert took time from her busy tour to give us a look at her life outside music, including her devotion to helping dogs and young musicians. You’ll be awed by her good deeds, including her MuttNation Foundation, in “All Heart” (page 74). She may be a superstar, but her message is down-to-earth: “It’s always been the way of our family to take care of others.”

Speaking of taking care of others, don’t miss “Look For The Helpers” (page 78), a heart-warming story about local residents who bring cheer and treatment to hospital patients. You’ll meet some special people – a music therapist, an art therapist, a clown and a pet therapist – who each administer their own type of healing.

We also tip our hats to longstanding nonprofits who established the area charity scene. Read “The Originals” (page 84) for a look at some of the organizations that have stood the test of time and continue to serve the needs of South Florida communities.

While some of these groups began before the dawn of computers, they – along with most other charities – have learned to harness the power of social media, including online charity challenges like the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. Learn more about this fundraising tool and what local nonprofits think about the technique in “Going Viral” (page 70).

After you’re done reading the issue, hang on to our annual guide to the season’s charity galas and luncheons (page 164), in our Calendar section. This is your essential schedule of local nonprofit events, many of which we’re honored to sponsor. We hope to see you there.

Finally, from The Boca Raton Observer family to yours, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving filled with good food, great company and memories to be grateful for.

Best,

Linda L. Behmoiras
