Kindness Counts

Strive To Make The World A Better Place

Sometimes the oldest quotes are the wisest — and that certainly rings true in the words of ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu who said, “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”

This sage sentiment is something I strive to emulate — both on a personal and professional level and I can’t think of a quote that more aptly summarizes our November Giving Issue.

We dive into the world of kindness with the compassionate Bethenny Frankel in our cover story, “Her New Reality” (page 68). Learn how Frankel has channeled her stardom into a philanthropic force, leading the way in disaster relief through her nonprofit B Strong and her partnership with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM).

It’s practically impossible to not remember a time when Marie Osmond filled our lives with joy — whether through song, dance, television shows or simply as an inspirational role model. Beyond all that she gives to her fans. “A Life Of Giving” (page 80) opens our eyes to Osmond’s role as a philanthropist, something she holds dear to her heart. In fact, we are eagerly anticipating her role as guest speaker at the JFS luncheon in February. From her work with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to her hectic schedule, it seems Osmond never stops!

Do you know who else doesn’t stop? The men and women who work tirelessly to keep us and our communities safe, clean and running smoothly at all costs. The pandemic put these hard-working and vital members of our society under dire strain, yet they still did not miss a beat! “Thank The Thankless” (page 74) is just that — a peek into who these people are and why they are so critical to us as a whole, so that next time we see them, we can offer a heartfelt thanks.

There are many ways to say thanks and give back. What if one entailed buying your favorite product as well? “Priceless Profit” (page 86) explores companies giving a percentage of your purchase back to a good cause. That’s shopping you can certainly feel good about.

As we enter the holiday season, the weather may not dip and the leaves may not turn red, but what holds true is the joy expressed as families prepare to gather, whether in person or virtually, and celebrate.  Go ahead and fix yourself a mug of spiced apple cider, hug your loved ones nearby and show an act of kindness along the way. Appreciate others and the gifts they bring to your footprint. Together, with small steps, we can make the world a better place.

With gratitude,

Linda L. Behmoiras
