Man Among Men

Celebrating Extraordinary Guys!

by

I love the quote by Chinese philosopher Confucius, “The man who moves mountains begins by carrying away small stones.” For me, it is an insightful blend of humility, patience, persistence, foresight and planning — all important attributes to the definition of a good man.

This month’s issue — our Men’s Issue — is jam-packed with inspirational stories on and about men. Let’s start with our cover story “Gift Of The Heavens” (page 62). Talk about moving mountains! The talented singer Andrea Bocelli will move your world with his beautiful tenor voice alone — he sure did for me when I saw him in concert last December! We’ll also introduce you to Asher Grodman in “Hardly Just A Ghost” (page 74). The charismatic actor currently playing a Wall Street stockbroker on the CBS hit “Ghosts” shares with us his rise to success, beginning with his undergraduate years studying film at Columbia University to his upcoming movie with Brooke Shields.

It’s a complicated, ever-changing world we live in, so we wanted to stop and take a look at how men fit in. Our story “How To Be A Man” (page 68) is an eye-opening exploration of society’s definition of men’s roles — both past and present — and the impact these labels have had.

“Do what you love,” and “work smarter, not harder” are just a couple of the sage pieces of advice handed down to me by my dad. “Father Knows Best” (page 80) recounts so many other useful nuggets of wisdom passed down from patriarchs of all walks of life who share their insight on raising children, how becoming a father has affected them and the lessons they have learned.

Guys tend to gravitate towards one another (whenever my family has a gathering all the men end up chatting around the grill!), which is why I am thrilled to share our story “The Bro Code” (page 86) exploring male friendships and why they are so important and beneficial in the short and long term.

Throughout my life, I’ve had the privilege of being surrounded by great men: my father, husband, two sons (now successful and caring young men) and close guy friends have supported, encouraged, enlightened and comforted me in both big moments and small. I cannot imagine my life without them, nor do I want to try! Whether you have a special man to give thanks to or are the one moving mountains one stone at a time, I hope you find this issue as enjoyable and informative as I do.

Of course, the month of May also marks Mother’s Day, so I would be remiss not to offer a heartfelt “Happy Mother’s Day” to all the moms on their special day.

With Gratitude,
