Cantor Magda Fishman Brings Joy Of Jewish Music To Her New Home

Cantor Magda Fishman has found a joyous home at B’nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton.

“I am excited to be part of a congregation that loves and appreciates Jewish music, prayer and values,” says Cantor Fishman, a renowned cantor/singer who moved to Boca in July with her husband, Zarin, and their son, Yair.

Cantor Magda Fishman has been received at the synagogue with much excitement. She enhances the spiritual life and is passionate about community building. “I believe that music can touch the soul and awaken our hearts,” says Cantor Fishman, a mezzo-soprano whose personal repertoire includes Israeli songs, jazz, liturgical masterpieces, musical theater and her own compositions.

Fishman is looking forward to the winter season of concerts, which will feature both traditional and new Jewish music.

“There is so much wonderful Jewish music and I love connecting the traditional to the modern,” she says. “I hope to bring a wide variety of musical experiences, prayer and teaching to our vibrant, multi-generational congregation.”

A graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary’s H.L. Miller Cantorial School in New York, Fishman was formerly cantor at Temple Beth El in Stamford, Connecticut. Prior to her investiture in 2011, Fishman served in the Israeli Army Orchestra as vocal soloist and trumpet player.

Over the years, Fishman has built a large following among a wide spectrum of audiences. She came to the United States as part of the Tel-Aviv Broadway Musical Theater Project and was the recipient of the prestigious America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship.

Fishman has performed extensively in Israel; Europe, where she had a lead role in the Prague State Opera; Canada; and the U.S., including the annual America-Israel Cultural Foundation Gala at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene at an event honoring Elie Wiesel. She was featured in Folksbiene’s popular Soul to Soul concert at the Central Park Summer Stage and at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles with Maestro Placido Domingo and Melissa Manchester. She also performs with the cantorial group Divas on the Bima.

Having a female clergy person adds a new and vital dimension to this traditional and egalitarian congregation. “I am excited to join this beautiful community and I hope to enhance spirituality through musical and prayer experiences,” says Cantor Fishman. Come hear!
