Alisa Cohen

Life Is Not A Dress Rehearsal

Meet Alisa Cohen: artist, health executive, actress, philanthropist, designer, educator, wife and mother – all rolled into one.

Cohen has led an ordinary yet extraordinary life. Despite significant tragedies and a life-altering accident, she lives her life with no excuses and pursues new adventures with relish. Cohen lives by several mottos, but the one that most represents her is: “Leave the room better than you found it.” She has dedicated her life to making the world healthier, wiser and kinder.

Cohen started the first Wellness Fair in Richmond, Virginia, and became a Palm Beach County Community Leader, a University of Florida (UF) mentor, a Women’s Build team captain and a board of directors member of Habitat for Humanity, a choir coordinator and a past board member of B’nai Torah Congregation, and founder of the bereavement support group Parent to Parent.

“Giving back to my community is paramount to me,” says Cohen.

She has been recognized for her charitable work via such honors as Woman of the Year from B’nai Torah, the Jewish Theological Seminary Shin Award and the Maimonides Award from the My Israel Center of South Florida. In 2018, Cohen was inducted into the UF Alumni Hall of Fame.

Cohen graduated Phi Beta Kappa and first in her class from UF. She fused two interests, art and science, and was a medical illustrator when she married G. Richard Cohen. Together, in 1991, Cohen and her husband, an ophthalmologist, opened The Cohen Laser and Vision Center (CLVC) in Boca Raton. Since then, she has remained its executive director. She also created Alisa Cohen Design, an interior design firm that specialized in residential and healthcare design.

“I do a lot with what I have been given, and I have been given a lot of wonderful things,” she says.

Currently a film and television actress, Cohen was delighted to interview Isaac Mizrahi when he was on his book tour in Boca Raton.

If asked, Cohen says her greatest achievement is her marriage to Richard and being the mother to two sons, Joshua (an ophthalmologist now working at CLVC and married to Rachel) and Zachary (a Ph.D. candidate in entomology) – and her Maltipom, Punim.
