Michael Brevda Fights For Neglected Nursing Home Residents

From bedsores and falls to outright physical and mental abuse, Michael Brevda has seen it all at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. First as a defense attorney and later as an attorney fighting for the rights of some of society’s most vulnerable people: the elderly.

“I started off defending nursing homes, but then I realized the many injustices that were taking place,” says Brevda, managing partner at Senior Justice Law Firm. “This is an area of the law that is grossly underserved. These vulnerable patients can’t advocate for themselves, and, if we don’t do it as civil justice attorneys, no one will.”

Sadly, many senior citizens fall victim to injury or death because they’re neglected, abused or ignored by nursing home staff. These vulnerable residents aren’t capable of telling someone that they’re being mistreated or victimized. Add to that the fact that the state simply doesn’t have the funds to investigate negligence, and you have a recipe for disaster.

“Much of the neglect is due to the fact that caregivers are overworked, underpaid and the facility is understaffed,” says Brevda, who adds that many of the companies that own these facilities put “profits before people.”

His cases have received national media exposure, and he’s often interviewed for his knowledge of nursing home abuse. His firm has three other attorneys as well as three offices in Florida, two in New York and one in Pennsylvania.

A graduate of the University of Florida, Brevda is a South Florida native. AV-rated with Martindale-Hubbell, he has been in practice for 11 years, during which time he has recovered tens of millions of dollars for clients and their families.

His victories have forced many nursing homes and assisted living facilities to change their policies and have resulted in the firing – and even the criminal conviction – of those responsible for the injury or abuse of a patient.

Despite his record, Brevda says it’s not always about money: “It’s about righting a wrong.”

He’ll continue holding large corporations accountable when they injure, neglect or kill defenseless patients. For that, he’s a champion to elder abuse victims and their families.
