Born in Hollywood, Florida, Shana Capra, DDS, expressed her passion for dentistry at a young age. Working in her family business is where she learned the meaning of grit and resilience. Hard work, dedication and community service run in the family.

Last year, with the support of her husband, Leonardo, and their five children, she launched The Kids Dental Practice in Delray Beach. Her goal is to educate parents on the importance of oral health and how early visits can avoid extensive dental work.

“It’s our job as parents to help children welcome their teeth into a healthy oral environment,” says Dr. Capra, who specialized in pediatric dentistry at Nova Southeastern University, where she served as chief resident. She is a board certified pediatric dentist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Capra says managing parents’ preconceptions of dentistry is among her biggest challenges.

“It’s important that we don’t pass down our dental fears to children and instead allow them to have their own experience by visiting a pediatric dentist early and allowing us to introduce dentistry,” she says.

To that end, she has put a lot of thought into her office, creating a sensory wall where children can hear, see and feel the instruments and materials before they sit in the dental chair as well as a baby lounge to accommodate new families and allow younger ones to acclimate to the dental office.

Dr. Capra knows that access and affordability can be barriers for many families seeking dental care. To overcome this, The Kids Dental Practice offers a membership plan. 

Cavities are the most common chronic disease in children, and more than 40 percent have cavities by the time they reach kindergarten. 

“I created the plan because I want children to have continuous access to dental care from an early age,” she says.

To reach more families, she will be posting educational videos on social media addressing parents’ frequently asked questions.
