Now in its 22nd year, the Annual OPAL Awards celebration is being planned for Jan. 18 at Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton.
This red carpet Hollywood-themed event raises thousands of dollars to be awarded as scholarships to deserving area students.
This year’s honorees are Toby and Leon Cooperman, Jerry Kramer, Laura Reiss, Doris and Neil Gillman, and Sue and Yaacov Heller. OPAL Awards recipients are selected each year by former winners and represent those “Outstanding People and Leaders” who have contributed through volunteerism to make the community a better place in which to live, work and play.
The Rotary Club of Boca Raton’s motto is “Service Above Self,” and its scholarship program emphasizes mentorship in addition to financial assistance. It serves our community’s most vulnerable population and provides both life skills and confidence to scholars, many of whom are the first in their family to attend college.
“This event has taken on a life of its own,” says Neil Saffer, professional auctioneer and event co-chair. “It is not only the premier event in Boca Raton every season, but, each year, the OPAL [alumni group] grows to include so many amazing honorees. The class of 2020 is no exception. These are individuals who lead by example and inspire us.”
Jan Savarick, event co-chair, adds: “This year, we are so fortunate to have OPAL recipient and philanthropist Bobby Campbell joining us as the host of this great event.”
The Boca Raton Observer is the event’s exclusive magazine sponsor. O
