To kick off Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s 50th anniversary, and support the ‘No Show’ Winter Ball — Stand up for the Children event held virtually in February, several generous donors combined their efforts to offer a $250,000 matching gift to help continue the organization’s critical hunger relief programs.
Marjorie S. Fisher Fund, Smith Brothers Family Foundation and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stiller offered the match challenge for maximum impact during this time of great need.
“Every year the Winter Ball raises over $1.5 million, of which $500,000 is raised the evening of the dinner for the club’s hunger-relief programs through the ‘Call to the Heart,’” Winter Ball chairman Hillie Mahoney explained. “This year cannot be any different if we want to make sure our most vulnerable children have the basic necessities for life. Because the need is even greater this year, we are taking our fight for hunger-relief to the internet.”
While Palm Beach County is one of the most affluent areas in the country, more than 53,000 local children still struggle with hunger in a normal year. Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County continues to be on the frontlines of the hunger-relief efforts as the need for the most disenfranchised families in our community escalates due to the pandemic.
“In 2020, Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County provided more than 1.2 million meals to children in need and a week’s worth of groceries to more than 100,000 individuals living in communities affected by poverty,” Winter Ball co-chairman Gretchen Leach said. “Donations will fund the continuation of our emergency hunger-relief program throughout 2021.”
