What began in 2003 with a couple of guys in Australia trying to get their friends to grow mustaches and bring them back into fashion, has become a global event to bring attention to men’s health issues including prostate and testicular cancer and mental health.
Movember is a combination of mustache or as they call it in Australia “Mo” and November with events taking place all month. The organization has raised more than $800 million and funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world in the past 20 years.
Many of the events are put on by individuals and include golf fundraisers, runs, parties and even a powerlifting competition. The official Movember website allows participants to sign up and help raise money.
Over the years several celebrities have taken part in Movember including former One Direction singer Liam Payne, former soccer player Peter Crouch and actor and rapper Ashley Walters.
Women, who are known as Mo Sisters, can also get involved by running or walking 60 miles over the month for the 60 men lost to suicide each hour, hosting events, creating challenges, encouraging men to be proactive in their own health, and, of course, putting up with that mustache their man is sporting just for the month.
