The Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., aka Bourbon City, is playing host to this year’s PGA Championship. It’s the fourth time this course has hosted the event.
It is one of the four men’s major golf championships which takes place May 13-19. The other three are the Masters, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship (British Open).
The event has been held every year, with a few exceptions, since 1916. It was the brainchild of merchandising magnate Rodman Wanamaker, after which the PGA Championship trophy is named.
Some of the most iconic names in golf have taken part in the contest. Jack Nicklaus, five-time PGA Championship winner holds the record for most wins. He also happened to design the Valhalla course, which opened in 1986. Tiger Woods comes in second with four wins.
There are 39 events from January through September and the payoff can be handsome. There’s nearly $400 million in official prize money and another $75 million in bonus money up for grabs.
This year’s purse for the PGA Championship is $17.5 million. Last year’s winner was Brooks Koepka, who was born in West Palm Beach and attended Florida State University.
Next year’s event will be held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.
