Welcome to 2019 and our January Health & Fitness Issue! I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year, and I hope you enjoyed the holidays. Season is in full swing, and we have so much to talk about in this mega-issue, which is jam-packed with health ideas, fitness tips, inspiring stories and more. So let’s jump right in!
First, we’ve got just what the doctor ordered: a one-on-one with Dr. Travis Stork of “The Doctors.” Viewers first fell in love with the ER doctor on “The Bachelor,” and he’s been dispensing medical advice on his show for the past 11 years. In “The Good Doctor” (page 62), he reflects on his interesting career path as well as what he considers the most pressing nutritional issue for Americans today. Don’t miss it.
Then, we assess another pressing health issue that’s becoming more and more troubling: the spread of Lyme disease across the country, including here in the Sunshine State. In “Florida In The Lyme-Light” (page 66), we examine possible reasons for the increased prevalence of the disease, controversy surrounding diagnosis and treatment, and more.
Next, we were thrilled to sit down with an inspiring young woman who made headlines last year for her courage – Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman – in “Stronger Than Ever” (page 74). The nation was shocked when she revealed she was one of more than 160 sexual-assault victims of USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar. She bravely faced him in court and turned her trauma into motivation, becoming a vocal advocate. She talked with us about her activism, her views on body image and diet, and more.
If – like many Americans – you find yourself addicted to your phone or other electronic device, it may be time for an intervention. In “Digital Detox” (page 76), we introduce 10 destinations worldwide where guests are encouraged to disconnect from technology and reconnect with what’s important.
Finally, we end with a look at a controversial health trend, biohacking, in “Better, Faster, Stronger” (page 84). This new breed of self-improvement seeks to supercharge human performance through gene-altering, extreme diet hacks and other questionable methods. We spoke to proponents – and opponents – of the practice to examine both sides of the coin.
Personally, I love this time of year because it’s a chance for a fresh start and new beginnings in any area of your life. I encourage you to try something new, push outside of your comfort zone and see where life takes you. Whether it’s finding a new hobby or a new friend, you just might surprise yourself – in the best way possible. Have a great month, and we’ll see you in February.
Best,
Linda L. Behmoiras
