If you missed the Miami Film Festival in March, have no fear, there’s another Oscar-worthy festival taking place April 14-23 in Central Florida. The Florida Film Festival is now in its 32nd year and will feature approximately 180 films, pared down from a record-breaking 2,800 film entries.
This year’s theme is “Florida Man.” “We decided to lean into Florida’s eclectic stereotype — the Florida Man — to build a fun, satirical, and playful voice for the festival. Florida is known for its bizarre ‘Only in Florida’ headlines, our chaotic relationship with alligators, and the notorious ‘Florida Man’ trope, but not so much for its vibrant arts scene. As an arthouse nonprofit theater and cultural organization, we wanted to combine these two personalities of Florida to play into one of the nation’s favorite jokes,” said Deanna Tiedtke, director of public relations and development at Enzian, which puts on the event.
As with the Miami Film Festival, attendees will get to meet and mingle with filmmakers and celebrities. The opening night party is set to take place at Winter Park Event Center where guests will eat, drink and talk about all of the films they hope to catch in the next ten days.
The Florida Film Festival is accredited as a qualifying festival for the Oscars® in the Live Action Short, Documentary Short and Animated Short film categories. The winner of the Grand Jury Award in each of these categories automatically qualifies to enter the following year’s Academy Awards®.
Last year’s winner of the Grand Jury Award, the festival’s top prize for Narrative Feature, was Poser, a character-based psychodrama set against the backdrop of the underground music and art scene of Columbus, Ohio.
