File this one under “only in South Florida”: a 700-ton holiday tree created by hand – with sand.
Friends and families in colder climes may be celebrating in a winter wonderland, but, in West Palm Beach, Sandi, a 35-foot-high tree adorned with more than 5,000 lights, has enthralled young and old alike with its tropical take on the season.
It took nearly a month to truck in the sand and sculpt Sandi on a wooden base structure (the intricate designs are amazing). Be sure to save the date, Dec. 5, for her public debut – complete with synchronized music and lights – at Clematis By Night in downtown. The event, which begins at 6 p.m., will include entertainment by Bay Kings band.
The one-of-a-kind tree will be on display through Dec. 31 and features nightly light shows, visits from Santa, strolling singers and other surprises. Activities abound, with glow-in-the-dark mini golf, holiday photo ops, a pancake breakfast, music and more.
