The increasing number of out-of-state license plates spotted on the roads affirms that Miami has truly become the ultimate darling destination. Sure, we’ve always had visitors (what’s not to love, between the climate and pristine beaches?), but add to that the recent influx of culinary offerings and the Magic City has morphed into an alluring option for discerning foodies seeking a holiday escape in the sun. Enter The National Hotel Miami Beach, an adults-only hotel that provides the best of both worlds: a charming, historic waterfront property paired with exceptional dining from its eatery Mareva 1939 and fabulous cocktails from the newly minted Martini Bar.
Built in 1939 by architect Roy France (credited for much of the Miami Beach Art Deco skyline), The National opened to much fanfare in 1940 and played an active part in attracting the celebrities that would frequent the area then.
With 137 spacious guest rooms and suites (most of which are housed in the property’s iconic 14-story tower), The National provides clever nods to the golden age of travel while incorporating modern touches throughout. Plush bedding guarantees a good night’s rest, and the welcoming South Florida sunshine brightening each room promises a happy space to relax and recharge.

Expansive, modern rooms
The beach is a quick walk away (the hotel has a reserved area with chairs and towels), but first, you’ll want to take a dip in the stunning, infinity-edge pool: a long rectangle that seems to go on forever. In fact, at 205 feet, it is the longest pool in all of South Beach. Choose to stay at one of the more modern Cabana Rooms (as opposed to the original Art Deco Tower accommodations) and you’ll be treated to a balcony overlooking the signature pool.
There’s a smaller, comfortably heated pool next to the hotel’s casual Aqua Grill eatery known for its refreshing salads, a killer burger and addictive cocktails like the (off-menu) blackberry mojito. Guests can reserve a poolside cabana which comes with a bottle of prosecco, sodas and water, alongside crudite and fruit platters for the ultimate day of relaxation.
For those wanting to stay active, there are yoga classes as well as retro-styled bikes guests can borrow for a fun excursion in South Beach.

Martini Bar
Be sure to kick off the evening with a visit to the Martini Bar, whose elegant, rich façade feels straight out of “The Great Gatsby.” Enjoy specialty cocktails like Pear With Me (pear vodka, amaretto, lemon, pear syrup and foam bitters) or Hibiscus Beauty (hibiscus-infused vodka, St. Germain, lemon, ginger syrup and sage) while perusing the highly curated collection of art, including brightly painted portraits and photographs of stars like Marilyn Monroe, David Bowie and Keanu Reeves. Look up at the ceiling of the Martini Lounge (prior to entering the bar) to take in the stunning mosaic composed of tiny tiles patterned after the 1930 painting by Tamara de Lempicka, “Young Lady With Gloves.”
Make your way to the hotel’s restaurant, Mareva 1939, and prepare for a meal to remember. Named “Best Spanish Restaurant” by Miami New Times, Chef Sergio Chamizo dazzles diners with tapas and “arroces” (rice dishes) with options like the Black Paella (seared scallops, shrimp, aioli) alongside other hits like Roasted Bone Marrow — caramelized onions and oxtail marmalade, sesame toast; Pan Seared Branzino, potato cream, bilbaina sauce and Honey-Spiced Duck Breast, parsnips, savory granola and apple beurre noisette. You won’t regret ending the night with Caramelized Torrija Brioche, coconut ice cream, pink guava or Manchego Cheese Flan, red bell pepper compote and crispy tuile. Wrap things up with a nightcap and live music (Thursday-Saturday) at Bar 1939.
It’s no wonder The National Hotel is a popular destination for weddings. Between the Art Deco decor, legendary pool and old Miami Beach feel, it’s understandable to be smitten by the place. Still, there’s no need to wait for a lifetime event to enjoy its hospitality. For those craving a quick and easy getaway that’s steeped in Miami history and simmers with flavor and fun, this is the spot to be.
The National Hotel is located at 1677 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. For more information, call 305-423-7226 or visit nationalhotel.com.
