Whether you’re lounging on the beach or by the pool, you don’t just need sunglasses and SPF: A sensational swimsuit is essential.
But, with so many options to choose from – in terms of quality, cut, color and design – how do you know what’s right for you?
We spoke to Jessica Garcia, the designer and owner of Boca Raton swimwear brand Ola Feroz, for her insights on finding a suit that suits you.
Quality Over All
Fabric and construction are key. Choose a suit made of a fabric with a higher percentage of polyester than nylon, she advises. With nylon, “it’s going to be nice at first, but, after the 10th wash – and even just being worn in the jacuzzi or the pool – it’s not going to hold up as well.” Also, a suit that is sewn well and has stronger elastic will last longer. In short: Invest in a quality suit rather than choosing a cheap option.
Find A Fab Fit
A swimsuit that fits well is always in style, so keep in mind your body type – in addition to your lifestyle and coverage preference – when you go shopping. For athletic types, Garcia recommends a suit you can easily wear under clothes, without strings or underwires. For curvier frames, try a high-waisted bottom and a top with an underwire or a halter.
Queue Up Color
When choosing a suit, pick a color that complements your skin tone, Garcia says. All hues look good on darker skin tones, while those with fairer skin should stay away from unflattering blush or neutral tones. Go for a bright coral or blue instead. And don’t forget prints: Floral and tropical designs are perennial favorites, she says, and vertical stripes are preferable over horizontal ones for their slimming effect.
More Is More
“Back in the day, you’d pack one bathing suit for a three-day trip,” Garcia says. “Now, girls are packing three suits – one for each day.” But smart design and pairing can eliminate that need. “If a suit is reversible or even convertible, then you just get more wear out of it. Also, mixing and matching tops and bottoms is always something people are doing to get a different look.” O
