MAD ARTS TO HOST FEFU AND HER FRIENDS: AN IMMERSIVE THEATRE PRODUCTION BY THINKING CAP THEATRE
to
MAD Arts 481 S. Federal Hwy, Dania Beach , City of Dania Beach, Florida 33004
MAD Arts, an organization within the MAD Agency, dedicated to providing a playground for art and artmaking, will host Thinking Cap Theatre’s (TCT) immersive theatre production of Fefu and Her Friends by award winning playwright María Irene Fornés.
Fefu and Her Friends is an innovative play hailed by practitioners and scholars as one of the most important American plays in the last half century, written by the late great María Irene Fornés (1930-2018). Set in the spring of 1935 at the New England country home of the title character, the play’s surface premise is simple and often comic: Fefu has gathered her friends to drink lemonade, play croquet, and plan and rehearse a fundraiser to benefit arts in education. Beneath this surface lies a probing investigation of friendship, gender, sexuality, class, and disability.
The unique production reimagines the concept of a “stage” with the audience moving through four different rooms of the MAD Arts space for a portion of the play in addition to viewing scenes in the dedicated black box theatre.
The first and last acts of the play are viewed together, but for Act Two, attendees will be divided into four groups to visit various ‘rooms’ in Fefu’s home.
An opening night reception and performance will take place on Saturday, June 4 at 8 p.m. and performances will then take place on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays throughout June.
“Sunday Talkbacks” with the Cast, Director, Creative Team, and Guest Speakers will take place every Sunday after the 4 p.m. performance.
MAD Arts’ 56,000 square foot state-of-the-art venue will serve as the new residency for Thinking Cap Theatre. The venue’s expertise and resources will give TCT capabilities they have never had before.
Future Thinking Cap Theatre performances at MAD Studios will include The Importance of Being Oscar, a dramatic tribute to the iconic Irish playwright, Oscar Wilde, and O Christmas Tree, an original play with music inspired by interviews with Florida Christmas Tree Farmers.
