“Second Career Artists” Exhibition opens May 5th at 5:00 pm and runs through June 24th at the Boynton Beach Arts & Cultural Center (125 East Ocean Avenue) in Downtown Boynton Beach. This exhibition will feature over 10 artists residing in Palm Beach County that have transitioned into the arts as a second career. Each artist left, or retired, from careers in academia,
corporate management, the military, finance and others to make a deep commitment to creating art.
Through their displayed artworks, biographies and artist statements, this exhibition explores the facts and inspiration behind each artist’s transition. Each one demonstrates that a second career in the arts is possible for anyone. From psychedelic landscapes and cardboard sculptures to miniature 3D reproductions of Diego Rivera’s frescos, the “Second Career Artists Exhibition” showcases art almost as varied as the artists themselves. For example, upon retiring from a 30-year career in design, Sandra Swill became a docent with the Boca Raton Art Museum and found inspiration from the art that surrounded her on every tour. Starting with acrylic painting during the COVID-19 pandemic, she eventually moved to repurposed cardboard sculptures and has, as she said, “been rewarded by the reaction to [her] work.” She has exhibited at the Arts Garage, sold several of her pieces, and was the subject of multiple articles in South Florida.
The exhibition will encompass a small selection of the thousands of Floridians that have joined the artist community as adults. Selection was based on uniqueness of work. These artists created what they felt, not necessarily to find an audience.
Exhibiting artists include:
