Everything about Brick & Barrel Gastro Pub is a beautifully executed labor of love and a celebration of area talent in the Lake Park Arts District. This new dining destination is brought to you by two local pals: David Schroeder, owner and chef, and Mario Villar, partner and general manager.
The vibe is warm and welcoming. You'll immediately notice the stunning wall mural by local artist Craig McInnis and want to stop by the brick-adorned bar for some truly unusual craft cocktails. At a time when most gastropubs are beer-focused, this one is for whiskey lovers - but not in an overwhelming way. There are plenty of other libations to choose from.
The Smoke cocktail is one wild ride, made with bourbon, vanilla bean, cinnamon bitters, hickory smoke and old fashioned. (It's also tasty made with dark rum instead of whiskey.) The delicious Pecan F'n Pie combines Protect the Revenue Whiskey, cinnamon bitters, a filthy cherry and old fashioned. Those who are bacon-obsessed must try The Swine - bacon-fat-washed bourbon, maple syrup, habanero, black walnut bitters and old fashioned, topped with bacon - which would pair well with a bar snack like Crispy Paprika Pig Ears, similar to chicharrones.
Sensational small plates include the 13 Minute Scotch Egg, a boiled egg wrapped in country sausage and breadcrumbs, then fried and served with tangy aioli, and the Shrimp Sevilla, Spanish-style shrimp simmered in spiced tomato sauce and served with focaccia for dipping.
Brick & Barrel also does a dreamy, light version of pizza with a focaccia base. Choose from several versions, including The Forager, combining crimini and oyster mushrooms with goat cheese and balsamic vinegar.
For large plates, have the hearty Oxtail "Shepherd's Pie" - 18-hour stout-braised oxtail, roasted fingerling potatoes, roasted carrots and parsnip puree. The Brezel Salmon is deliciously creative, with the salmon served pretzel-crusted with herbed farro, Dijon-shallot sauce, watercress and tomato vinaigrette. The Slow Cooked Ribs are also a treat, featuring sous vide spareribs with hoisin glaze, served over pineapple sticky rice.
When you get to dessert, sample the just-right Belgian Waffle, authentically made with a liege waffle, homemade ice cream and strawberry sauce. If you just want ice cream, ask for the flavors of the day - all are amazing. And, if you're very lucky, Brick & Barrel will be serving its killer Coconut Crème Brulee. O
