“The Book of Mormon” returns to Fort Lauderdale from Dec. 12-17 at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts as part of The Bank of America Broadway in Fort Lauderdale 2023/2024 season.
Since its premiere on Broadway in March 2011, “The Book of Mormon” has become one of the most successful shows in Broadway history, breaking the Eugene O’Neill Theater house record more than 50 times, according to a press release.
“’The Book of Mormon’ follows two young missionaries who are sent to Uganda to try to convert citizens to the Mormon religion. One missionary, Elder Price, is an enthusiastic go-getter with a strong dedication to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward but well-meaning nerd whose tendency to embroider the truth soon lands him in trouble. Upon their arrival in Africa, Price and Cunningham learn that in a society plagued by AIDS, poverty and violence, a successful mission may not be as easy as they expected,” says Broadway’s website.
The many accolades the comedy musical has received over the years include nine Tony Awards for Best Musical, five Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. American Critic and Journalist, Ben Brantley from The New York Times says it’s the “Best musical of this century. Heaven on Broadway! A celebration of the privilege of living inside that improbable paradise called a musical comedy.”
“’The Book of Mormon’ has been performed on three continents and has won over 30 international awards. The musical has smashed long-standing box office records in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney and cities across the U.S. and the world,” notes a press release.
