American Heritage Schools' Pre-Law Society presents its annual comedy series, "Stand Up for Innocence," at the schools' Broward Campus on Feb. 3. The event aims to raise funds for Innocence Project of Florida, a nonprofit that helps innocent prisoners obtain their freedom and rebuild their lives.
Since its inception in 1965, American Heritage Schools, a private college preparatory day school with two 40-acre campuses (the Broward Campus and the Palm Beach Campus), has served around 4,800 students from PK3 through 12th grade. One of American Heritage Schools’ largest organizations run by students on-campus is the Pre-Law Society, host of the event.
According to American Heritage Schools’ website, students who form part of the Pre-Law Society explore legal topics, interact with guest attorneys and judges and are encouraged to try out for competitive teams such as Mock Trial and Moot Court.
This year’s “Stand Up for Innocence” series features Karen Bergreen, a renowned standup comedian, novelist and former lawyer with appearances on Comedy Central and performances both on TV and around New York City comedy clubs.
Attendees can also expect an opening act by Andy Pitz, who has performed standup comedy for over 20 years and has appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” as well as headliner Owen Smith, accomplished comedian, writer and actor who has been featured on “Conan and Colbert” and has written for “Black•ish,” “Are We There Yet?” and “Everybody Hates Chris.”
All proceeds from the show will support The Innocence Project of Florida to help find and free innocent people from prison. According to a press release, the nonprofit’s mission is “to screen and investigate cases in which meritorious innocence claims are identified; secure DNA testing when biological evidence exists; advocate for the release and/or exoneration of individuals whose cases present meritorious innocence claims based on evidence of actual innocence; provide transitional and aftercare services to exonerees; and advocate for necessary criminal justice reform to avoid wrongful incarcerations in the future.”
“Stand Up for Innocence” is scheduled for Feb. 3 at 8:15 p.m. at American Heritage Schools’ Broward Campus: 12200 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation.
