This weekend May. 6-8, the 2022 Grand Prix Formula 1 Race is coming to South Florida for the first time. The race will take place on a temporary street circuit outside the home of the Miami Dolphins at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The debut of the Grand Prix takes place this year with the Miami race, becoming the second U.S. race on the calendar after Austin, Texas and the 11th American venue to host a round of the F1 World Championship.
The track features a 19-turn lap that gives off a street circuit vibe, similar to the popular Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit, used annually for the F1 Australian Grand Pix. With the Hard Rock Stadium as its epicenter, the 5.41 km layout features 19 corners, three straights for the three drag reduction systems (DRS) zones (a method used by F1 drivers to follow their rivals more closely and try to overtake them) and an estimated top speed of 320 km/h.
More than 300,000 race fans are expected to visit Miami for the event, which is sponsored by crypto.com. Event organizers project an economic impact of $400 million to the City of Miami Gardens, with top hotels charging more than $100,000 per night for their top suites. Hotspot restaurants are curating special dining experiences with a price tag of $3,000 per person.
“This is going to be the biggest week in Miami history,” says Jeff Zalaznick, managing partner of Major Food Group, which owns restaurants like Carbon, ZZ’s Club and Sadelles.“We’ve never seen demand like this. It’s going to be a very hedonistic experience.”
