With everything on our minds these days, it’s easy to let some things slide, such as skin care.
Since few of us are going to work or socializing like before – and probably not visiting the dermatologist, either – you might’ve skipped washing your face here and there and maybe slacked on your skin care regimen. You might be spending so much time with your kids' virtual learning that your needs have fallen by the wayside. And maybe your diet has taken a turn for the worse as well. (We blame Uber Eats.)
One day, you wake up and realize: You’ve got work-from-home face.
This totally unscientific skin condition might include blackheads, dry skin, stress-induced breakouts, worry lines and more. But don’t frown (it’ll cause more wrinkles). There’s light at the end of the tunnel.
We turned to Jacob Steiger, M.D., of Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery in Boca Raton, for his tips on keeping our skin in prime condition during quarantine – or at least until we can visit the dermatologist or esthetician again.
- Throw your skin some shade. “During this time, many of us are staying at home and in our backyards," says Dr. Steiger. "In these situations, we are more exposed to the sun more than ever before, especially as we are progressing through spring. Keep your skin protected with a chemical-free sun block.” Remember: The higher the SPF, the better.
- Moisture is your friend. “Making sure that our skin stays adequately hydrated is key," he says. "Use a good moisturizer.” And be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day and try to cut back on caffeine and alcohol. (We said try.)
- Exfoliate your heart out. “Many people may want to use a gentle exfoliator, such as a glycolic acid, to help stimulate collagen production and keep the skin refreshed,” says Dr. Steiger. Glycolic acid is available in various forms, including serums, face washes, peels and toners.
