This only happens once a year, so you don't want to miss it. The International Ballet Festival of Miami offers a mesmerizing cornucopia of dance performed by local, national and international artists.
The festival, billed as the only of its kind in Florida, offers several shows at Miami-Dade County and Broward County venues this month, featuring more than 100 dancers representing more than 20 ballet companies.
Over the years, international companies that have participated include the Vienna State Opera Ballet, Salzburg Ballet, Australian Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders and the Hong Kong Ballet. National companies include New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater and San Francisco Ballet.
"The festival has accomplished the task of introducing audiences to a stunning array of national and international ballet companies encompassing Europe, Asia, Latin America and the USA," notes the company's website. "It has also provided the opportunity for local dance and ballet companies to demonstrate their talent alongside the world's most renowned dancers."
The programs include a contemporary performance showcasing an eclectic mix of dance styles set to music ranging from Bach to contemporary tunes. Dancers from France, Mexico, Italy and the United States star in this particular show on Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
Also on tap: the Etoiles Classical Grand Gala Performance on Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. Audiences will experience dance stars from around the world performing famous classical and neo-classical ballet repertoires. The evening will also include "A Life for Dance" Achievement Awards to honor ballet dancers, choreographers and directors. O
