“Real Bodies: The Exhibition” sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie.
The show, arriving at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, features preserved human bodies that, ironically, reveal what it means to be alive.
“Appropriate for all ages, ‘Real Bodies’ goes beyond skin deep to reveal the mysteries of human anatomy, exploring the body through physiology, culture and emotion,” notes a press release about the exhibit, which opens Sept. 28 and runs through April 11.
“‘Real Bodies’ takes visitors on a journey, asking them to explore who they are, where they come from and what they choose to do with the life and body they have.”
The bodies – preserved by replacing bodily fluids with liquid plastic that hardens, creating a specimen that lasts indefinitely – are so detailed that even the most delicate tissue structure remains intact. Visitors will see the connections between breathing, hunger, heart rhythm, motion and thought as well as a glimpse of COVID-19’s impact on the body.
“We are thrilled to bring ‘Real Bodies’ to Palm Beach County,” says Kate Arrizza, Science Center president and CEO, in a press release. “This is a rare opportunity to see the human body from the inside, which we hope will spark an interest in children to seek careers in science and medicine.” O
