Yet another event has been modified due to the pandemic.
This time, it’s the popular annual Lantern Festival at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. The experience, which was scheduled for Oct. 17, won’t be forgotten, though.
“The museum understands how meaningful and magical this holiday is to their guests and will be offering beautiful Lantern-at-Home Kits to light up at-home celebrations and welcome home beloved ancestors’ spirits in honor of Obon,” notes a press release.
Considered one of the most important Japanese holidays, Obon brings families together as they invite the spirits of ancestors for a visit.
“On the last day of the three-day observance, families gather to light the way back to the otherworld for departing ancestors with floating lanterns called toro nagashi,” explains the museum’s website. “The ancestors are believed to depart for the otherworld guided by the illuminated lanterns.”
The kits, which include a wood base, white wishing paper, a tea light and a link to exclusive Lantern Festival content, are available in the Morikami Museum store or online.
Staffers suggest placing lanterns in a pool, lake or bathtub – and snapping photos to post on Instagram. Participants who share a photo by Oct. 12 will be placed in a drawing to win admission for two to the 2021 Lantern Festival, expected to take place at the museum.
