Since 2020 has been the year of doing things differently, we’ve got just the ticket for some unusual holiday fun.
Get your virtual tickets for “The Hip Hop Nutcracker,” presented by The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 20 at 3 p.m.
The show, which lasts about an hour and a half, features a contemporary dance set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music. Although this “unique and joyful event” features breakdancing instead of classical ballet, the beloved storyline remains the same.
“Just like the original, in ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker,’ Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets and learning the lessons of the holiday season,” notes the production’s website. “Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th-century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City.”
Although this is a virtual event, ticketholders can enhance the experience with a VIP package including 48-hour access to the show, either a post-show chat with dancers and cast or a “front row” history of the show.
“Through this re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, the dynamic performers of ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’ take us on a journey that celebrates love, community and the magic of the holiday season,” the website explains.
