Director Gerard Alessandrini counts himself among the millions obsessed with “Hamilton.”
But, while the rest of us talk, tweet and post about the revered musical, he created the ultimate tribute: “Spamilton: An American Parody,” dubbed a “side-splitting new musical that roasts, eviscerates and celebrates Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway musical.”
Alessandrini, the creator of “Forbidden Broadway,” elaborates in a Facebook post: “After satirizing musicals for 30 years, I couldn’t help but feel obligated to take a few jabs at the biggest hit musical that has opened in New York in my lifetime. At first, I started to write just a parody or two for fun; then I found myself re-writing most of ‘Hamilton’ while adding bits and pieces of other classic and contemporary musicals.”
It was an instant hit. The tour, stopping at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach April 22-26, shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
“‘Spamilton’ substitutes the story of Miranda, a Broadway revolutionary, for the story of Alexander Hamilton, the original American revolutionary,” according to Alessandrini’s post.
“The rhymes of ‘Alexander Hamilton,’ the opening number from ‘Hamilton,’ are rejiggered to introduce Broadway’s reigning king, whose Tony-winning show has become one of the hottest tickets in the land.”
Other characters include caricatures of Broadway legends like Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald, Stephen Schwartz and Barbra Streisand.
And, if you haven’t been lucky enough to see “Hamilton,” don’t worry. You’ll still have “side-splitting fun” watching “Spamilton,” says HuffPost. O
