Traditionally, sellers had three choices, he explains. They could take their pieces to a jeweler, who usually accepted jewelry on consignment; a jewelry district, where they would get asked expectations before an offer; or an auction, where they left their items on consignment, hoping for competitive bidders.
CIRCA is successful, Beardsley adds, because an offer is made on the spot. (Rare items, however, may be put on consignment.) The company purchases many estate probate and community property settlements. For privacy purposes, CIRCA only sells the items at its Manhattan location.

“We found out that there were a lot of clients in Boca, Broward and Dade who would never have driven to Palm Beach; it was a pleasant surprise,” Beardsley says.
The company looks for the finest jewelry pieces from design houses like Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and David Webb. It also buys many Rolex, Patek Philippe and other fine watches.
CIRCA prefers finer quality diamonds, accounting for size as well. According to Beardsley, cut is as important as clarity and color. Most quality diamonds sold today larger than 1 carat usually have a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) diamond report, the one document that CIRCA takes verbatim. But, because Beardsley is a GIA graduate gemologist, it’s not necessary to have one.
“A lot of people have tried to copy CIRCA,” he points out. “Our advantage is that we are discreet and prepared for immediate payment.” O
