Handbag Restoration
Chris Moore knows the sentimental value of fine handbags and his company Artbag works tirelessly to repair, clean and restore these special pieces to their near-original quality.
“We do everything from minor stitching to changing linings, zippers, piping, enhancing color and hardware replating. Virtually anything that can be done, we do,” Moore says.
Artbag has brought well-loved bags, vintage bags and more back to their original condition, giving them new life, allowing them to be shown off once more and passed down to a new generation.
The company, which started in 1932 in New York and operated on Madison Avenue, moved last year to Coral Springs. Moore first joined his father in the company in 1993.
Artbag takes walk-ins at its Florida location and accepts mailed bags from around the world.
Employees often come from a leathersmith background and are specially trained to learn the delicate and specialized art of perfect stitching, pattern making, color matching, handle repair and more for the utmost quality.
Moore emphasizes that Artbag is happy to repair bags of all types of materials and price points and even create a custom bag or duplicate a favorite.
“We don’t just work on high-end bags; many customers have purchased non-designer bags and love the bag so much they want to have it repaired or a duplicate made. Price [of a bag] is not a concern on our side of the counter as far as what we’re willing to do,” Moore says.
His favorite part of the business is customer interaction. Artbag has worked with generations of lawyers on repairing a special briefcase that has been passed down from grandfather to grandchild and restoring a sentimental bridal bag that has been gifted through generations.
“We take something in tatters and give it back in great condition,” Moore says. “I love seeing the look on someone’s face when they pick it up and say, ‘This can’t be my bag, it looks totally brand new!’”
