Stronger Together: Five Women Unite To Serve Family Law Clients
When Jodi Furr Colton came to Brinkley Morgan in 2010, she was one of three female attorneys, just one of whom was a partner. That partner, Roberta Stanley, now the managing partner of the firm, was on a mission to ensure that not only were women attorneys fully represented, but that they held leadership positions within the firm.
Today, Colton is one of five female members of the firm’s 10-member Family Law Practice and one of four partners in that group, each of whom brings a unique set of skills.
“Every one of us has a different skill set and set of interests, so it gives us an amazing ability to customize our services to a client’s particular needs,” says Colton, who, along with her mentor, Stanley, focuses on complex family law matters, including dissolution of marriage cases involving property division, alimony and time-sharing as well as prenuptial and postnuptial agreements for high-net-worth clients.
Stanley is a board-certified specialist in marital and family law and a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Colton is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator.
In addition to Colton and Stanley, partner Yueh-Mei Kim Nutter, partner Julia Wyda and associate Dominique Sciullo-Craig make up the five female members of the firm’s 10-member Family Law Practice.
Nutter also is a board-certified specialist in marital and family law as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She concentrates her practice in the areas of family law, guardianships, and probate and estate litigation.
Wyda concentrates her practice in all areas of marital and family law, including dissolution of marriage, paternity, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, cohabitation agreements and child dependency. She is also the current president-elect of the Palm Beach County Bar Association. Sciullo-Craig, the newest member, handles divorce, paternity, post-dissolution modification and enforcement matters.
Established in 1975, Brinkley Morgan provides a wide range of legal services in the areas of real estate; business litigation; corporate; wills, trusts and estate planning; probate litigation; local government; marital and family; bankruptcy; administrative; and tax. It’s that bench strength that clients have come to rely on.
“We are stronger together. We work collaboratively together, we share ideas, we brainstorm, we help each other strategize. That’s a huge resource for our clients,” says Colton.
The firm values longevity and recognizes that, to retain good people, you must be willing to accommodate both their professional and personal needs.
“The firm’s leadership recognizes that your obligations to your family are just as important as your work,” says Colton.
Although divorce can be hard, she says it’s often necessary so that families can end up in a better place.
“We have a strong moral compass. We think about what is reasonable and fair and equitable – not winning at all costs because that destroys families, and that’s not our job,” Colton says.
“We want our clients to end up better than they were when they came in the door and to feel like they have successfully navigated to the other side of a difficult time in their lives.”
