Barbara Singer Leads Community Volunteer Initiatives
Barbara Singer has been an active volunteer throughout her adult life. When her daughter Deb was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes in the 1970s, she began raising funds for research.
“The first year, we raised $1,500,” she recalls. “But, the next year, it was $50,000, and we were on our way.”
Her philanthropic work helped establish the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine and has been part of the DRI Foundation for more than four decades.
After her daughter passed away in 2001, Singer and her husband, Shelly, moved from Miami to Delaire Country Club.
“We came for a visit and fell in love with the community,” she says. “Delaire is a real gem, full of wonderful, generous people.”
A gated community with 326 private homes on 340 acres, Delaire offers a casually elegant country club experience featuring a recently renovated 27-hole Joe Lee-designed championship golf course, a full-service tennis facility and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Members also enjoy the benefits of Delaire’s Clubhouse, world-class dining, a child-friendly walk-in pool, and an enclosed playground and children’s fountain.
For the past 18 years, Singer has been actively involved in Delaire, editing the club’s newsletter and serving on the board of the homeowner association. She is also one of a group of 40 residents who take part in a volunteer literacy program, helping second graders at Orchard View Elementary School learn how to read.
“Many of these children live in poverty, making it hard for them to succeed in school,” she says. “It gives us a tremendous feeling of satisfaction to see them make progress, even in small steps.”
A breast cancer survivor, Singer is also involved in the club’s Play for P.I.N.K. fundraising week, supporting breast cancer research, where she is sponsor chairman.
“Delaire is my home,” she says. “When my husband passed last April, I got incredible support from my friends and neighbors. It truly is a special community.”
Delaire Country Club is located at 4645 White Cedar Lane, Delray Beach. For more information, call 561-499-9090 or visit delaire.org.
