Orthopaedic Surgery and Pain Medicine
If physicians at a practice send their own family to see their colleagues, that’s a telling sign. Those referrals are a testament to the professional knowledge they provide.
Such is the case at Florida Spine Associates. They’ve been a leader in the field of spine care over the past decade. Since then, the practice has grown to seven locations in Palm Beach and Broward counties offering a patient-centric care model including physical therapy, pharmacy dispensing and onsite procedure facilities. They offer the full gamut of emerging technology that’s become available in spinal surgery.
Indeed, Florida Spine Associates is a one-stop shop. Patients benefit from a team approach.
“A lot of places do just chiropractor or physical therapy or pain management,” says Milad Alam, M.D., a board certified orthopedic spine surgeon with a specialty in minimally invasive surgical techniques and motion preservation (non-fusion) surgeries for the adult degenerative spine and robotic spine surgery. “But they’re not all under one roof and they’re at multiple locations. Here, we’re all board certified and have spine surgeons, pain management specialists and physical therapists. Everyone practices with the newest technology and evidence-based treatment. We’re really a one-stop shop for neck, mid and back and can treat almost any kind of pain.”
Dr. Alam is a leader in minimally invasive spine surgery techniques which allows patients to heal faster with less pain and scarring. He works closely with his patients in creating customized nonsurgical and surgical plans of care.
According to Robert P. Norton M.D., “The greatest developments in spine surgery are technology driven which has allowed more to be done in an ambulatory outpatient setting. We can now perform cervical and lumbar fusions or disc replacements and our patients can return home in just a few hours after surgery.”
You’ll also benefit from the office’s use of minimally invasive techniques which can help decrease the risk of infection and offer a better overall outcome.
William A. Kunkle, D.O., can use an endoscope to remove a herniated disc fragment, minimally disrupting tissue. He also takes advantage of augmented reality, which gives him X-ray vision so he can minimize soft tissue trauma and get accurate screw placement during surgery. “Offering these types of procedures meets the goal of care — getting patients on their feet to recovery and back to their life quicker.” Dr. Alam uses robotic spine surgery which improves post-op outcomes including shorter hospital stays and pain. “It really helps minimize incisions and helps with recovery,” says Dr. Alam who handles complex adult scoliosis cases. And Javier Sanchez, M.D. performs minimally invasive or non-spinal pain treatment for knee, shoulder or cancer pains.
“In terms of pain treatments, I try to maximize non-surgical modalities that include physical therapy, medications, injections/ procedures and sometimes durable medical equipment (like braces),” Seth MacMahon, M.D. explains. “I offer all the treatment options I can to improve pain and quality of life.”
Physicians are excited about the future of their field, with advances happening now and in the coming decades. “Spinal surgery is advancing so much,” says Dr. Kunkle. “The technology is robust, and we can continue to change and advance for the better. We’re able to positively affect lives in a dramatic way. We take care of these people and get them back to life. We’re not only saving lives. We’re also saving lifestyles.”
