Howard J. Gelb, M.D., Keeps Patients Fit And Moving
Howard J. Gelb, M.D., has one goal in his sports medicine practice: getting athletes of all levels back to doing their preferred activities.
The board certified orthopedic surgeon has been practicing for 26 years and has a wealth of experience working with all types of athletes. Dr. Gelb holds a subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine. According to the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, this added qualification is for “board certified orthopaedic surgeons who have demonstrated qualifications in sports medicine beyond those expected of other orthopaedic surgeons by virtue of additional training and a practice characterized by a volume of cases in sports medicine.”
“It doesn’t matter if you are doing yoga or running races – if your doctor doesn’t know anything about the sport, you’re not going to be able to receive tailored treatment,” Dr. Gelb says.
He specializes in treating athletic injuries of the shoulder, knee, hip and elbow in both adults and children. He frequently performs arthroscopic surgery using state-of-the-art technology that results in quicker recovery time.
He uses a minimally invasive method to treat ACL and meniscal tears, both common injuries among adult and pediatric athletes. Arthroscopic rotator cuff and shoulder stabilizations make up a large portion of his operative cases.
“It’s ACL repair, not reconstruction, which cuts recovery time in half,” Dr. Gelb says. “ACL reconstruction recovery can be up to a year. With ACL repair, I had a patient back competing at a high level after just four months.”
He treats a multitude of patients, including professional athletes, MMA fighters, local high-school athletes, collegiate athletes and recreational athletes. His onsite physical therapists help streamline and maximize the patient’s recovery.
Dr. Gelb also performs a minimally invasive, robotic partial-knee replacement surgery as well as total knee replacements as outpatient procedures.
