Weiss Egers Inspires, Nurtures, Leads
Marla Weiss Egers is the embodiment of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Raised in a home that instilled in her Jewish values, she has been working in the Jewish world for 30 years, first in New York and then in Boca Raton, where she moved 17 years ago with her husband and two sons.
As its executive vice president, Egers oversees everything from fundraising and marketing to planning and community engagement.
“My days are filled with opportunities to impact so many lives here and across the globe,” she says.
The federation addresses and plans for existing and future needs of Jewish people locally, in Israel and around the world in a variety of ways, including caring for vulnerable populations, education, community building and advocacy.
Anyone who works with Egers will tell you that she is a nurturing and inspiring leader – a trait deeply valued within the federation and the community.
She is proud to have had a part in helping the federation secure this year’s prestigious international Jerusalem Unity Prize.
“We have strived over the last six years to create unity,” she says. “We received this award because, together, we have built this extra-ordinarily collaborative community across all its Jewish diversity.”
Egers is quick to attribute much of her own and the federation’s successes to the “incredible volunteers, staff, and religious and lay leaders” who inspire her with their dedication, collegiality and professionalism.
“The work we do is holy. Together, we have the ability to save and transform lives. I have been fortunate in my years with UJA and federation to have personally borne witness to some miraculous moments in recent Jewish history, including the rescue and resettlement of majorJewish communities from the Former Soviet Union and Ethiopia,” Egers says. “These could not have happened without the federations’ overwhelming support.”
She adds: “I know when I go to sleep at night I am helping not only those in need locally and in Israel, but I am also helping those I will never know, in communities with names I can’t pronounce, in countries I may never visit.”
