Neurosurgery
As a fifth-generation medical doctor, John F. Morrison, M.D., FAANS, a general neurosurgeon who founded the Morrison Clinic, understands what it means to be a healthcare provider.
“I love helping people and using our knowledge of science and technology to understand what problems are going on inside the body. I always liked biochemistry; the way the nervous system works is fascinating,” says Dr. Morrison.
Neurosurgery was a natural fit for his interests and skills, though the field does have its difficult days. “In neurosurgery, we’re often involved in some of the toughest days of people’s lives. To be able to give comfort and care for people at that time is remarkable.”
As a general neurosurgeon, he sees young adults to elderly, treating brain tumors; aneurysms; spine, neck and back pain; and peripheral nerves such as carpal tunnel syndrome. He has offices in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin counties.
“I love operating and surgery,” says Dr. Morrison. He enjoys seeing the product of his work. “I especially love seeing patients after recovering from surgery, when they have overcome something that was really affecting their life. Surgery is a life changing event for the better.”
He knows no two patients are alike. “We see each patient as an individual,” says Dr. Morrison. “Everyone responds differently to therapy, treatment and surgery. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. I keep that in consideration and create a personalized plan for each patient.”
He believes in thoroughly educating patients. “We explain what’s going on and why each factor is being brought to the table, what different findings mean and how we can manage them,” he says. “I give the patient information and make our recommendations to help them reach the best decision for them. It’s a scary process. Our philosophy is to break it down into components and pieces and talk at a level the patient can understand.”
Dr. Morrison earned his undergraduate degree at University of Wisconsin-Madison and his medical degree at Creighton University. For residency and cerebrovascular neurosurgery training, Dr. Morrison attended Brown University and the University of Buffalo Neurosurgery. A Wisconsin native, he now resides in West Palm Beach with his family.
