Raul Gosthe, M.D., Of Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute Is An Expert In Complex Hip And Knee Replacement Surgeries
During the COVID-19 quarantine, Raul Gosthe, M.D., a board certified orthopedic surgeon at Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute, treated a 65-year-old patient with a serious injury to her replaced hip after a fall.
“The fall resulted in a terrible fracture around the hip implant,” says Dr. Gosthe. “She was unable to walk and required a large revision surgery to restore her quality of life. Thankfully, with modern implants and techniques, we were able to cure her problem and have her walking the next day. Now, she is back to enjoying walks around the lake and running after her grandkids.”
It’s the kind of challenging case that Dr. Gosthe – who is fellowship trained in hip and knee replacements – sees frequently in his practice, which includes both surgical and non-surgical treatments.
“My specialty is hip and knee replacement surgery, including complex revisions,” says Dr. Gosthe, who is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a frequent speaker and active volunteer with the Arthritis Foundation. “Although these revision procedures can be very challenging, they make a huge difference in a patient’s quality of life.”
Dr. Gosthe is also an expert in minimally invasive anterior hip and knee replacements, adept at using robotic or computer navigation. For example, he uses computer navigation to precisely perform a hip or knee replacement to ensure the best result possible. With a minimally invasive approach, healthy patients can go home the same day of the surgery and resume walking with an assistive device. By three weeks, most can walk independently, perhaps using a cane for balance, with full recovery in six weeks.
“Hip and knee replacement surgeries have a tremendous positive impact on our patients’ lives,” says Dr. Gosthe. “Typically, patients experience an immediate reduction in pain as well as a dramatic improvement in mobility and are able to enjoy life again. A well-done hip replacement is actually one of the best surgeries in all of medicine.”
