Lewis R. Shafer Delivers A Custom Approach To Your Divorce
Each client’s divorce case is unique,” says family law attorney Lewis R. Shafer, partner at Shafer Cohen, LLP in Boca Raton. “At the outset of every case, we work closely with the client to identify the specific issues that are important to them and involved in their divorce. We learn the client’s needs and desires so that we can tailor our approach and skill set accordingly. As part of this process, we explain to each client the applicable law affecting their divorce case, which helps them make informed decisions efficiently.”
Not all of Shafer’s cases are contentious. If divorcing spouses want to reach an amicable settlement, Shafer and his team assist the client in navigating the litigation-prone process to avoid unnecessary expense and anguish in reaching the client’s ultimate goal. If the divorce is acrimonious, Shafer will draw on his 25 years of family law experience in South Florida, and his background in public accounting, to zealously represent his client in achieving the best possible outcome, which may require litigation.
Shafer also pays close attention to developments in law that may affect his clients. For example, the recent tax law change affects how alimony is treated for tax purposes.
“It is anticipated that there will be a surge in divorce filings in 2018, as spouses paying alimony will seek to take advantage of the tax deductions given to the paying spouse before this benefit is eliminated on December 31, 2018,” he says.
Shafer began practicing law in New York and New Jersey in 1987 and moved to Boca Raton 25 years ago to open his current law practice and to raise his children, and now enjoys close ties with them as adults. Shafer has been involved in many charities and is active in the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.
Along with his Florida practice, Shafer maintains hislicense and offices in New York and New Jersey. “That is an asset for our South Florida clients who maintain part of their life – businesses, investments or real estate – in New York or New Jersey,” he says. “It has allowed us to handle multijurisdictional cases in-house, rather than retaining local counsel, which helps control legal fees and inefficiencies for the client.”
Reflecting on his career, Shafer says, “Every day, I strive to be the attorney that I would want representing me in similar matters. I believe that has made all the difference to the lives of my clients.”
