Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center At Deerfield Beach Offers One-Stop Approach To Cancer Care
Being diagnosed with cancer is a life-altering experience. Having a team of highly trained specialists on your side can help to take away some of the fear and anxiety that cancer patients face.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at Deerfield Beach offers targeted, multidisciplinary care through its team of more than 40 academic physicians in 22 cancer-related specialties. Because it’s an academic cancer center, there are more than 70 ongoing clinical trials in whichpatients can participate.
The Deerfield Beach location of Sylvester is part of the University of Miami Health System. It offers a full range of treatment options, a state-of-the-art radiation oncology center, a 27-chair chemotherapy infusion unit, a laboratory, a pharmacy and a comprehensive Women’s Center as well as support groups and educational and outreach services.
The Deerfield Beach team is led by Medical Director Mohammad Jahanzeb, M.D., an expert in breast and lung cancer.
“We are tumor-focused academic specialists practicing precision medicine,” he says. “We believe that cancer is no longer a disease to be taken care of by one doctor. It needs a team of doctors, genetic counselors, social workers and others to treat the patient as a whole.”
Studies show that patients treated at academic cancer research centers have a significantly lower mortality rate in their first year after being diagnosed than those treated at community hospitals.
“The most important thing for patients to know is that our survival rate is 20 percent greater than any other treatment offered in South Florida,” says Satellite Director Kathryn Bailey, MSN, MBA, RN. “When cancer specialists in our community have exhausted treatment options, they send patients to us. We never give up hope.”
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at Deerfield Beach is the only South Florida-based member of the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers, one of just 11 in the country, that are leading the way in the treatment of cancer.
The center is supported by The Pap Corps: Champions for Cancer Research, a volunteer organization that has raised more than $60 million for the center. As a result of its longstanding support, as of January 2018, the Deerfield Beach location is officially being named The Pap Corps Campus.
